Athens: From Gods to Graffiti: Ruins & Modern Murals Tour

Athens is home to a ton of graffiti, and if you don’t know the history, maybe you’ll see the city as unfit and unsafe—but it isn’t like that at all.

Actually, it’s quite the opposite. Athens is a safe city (of course if you have areas to avoid at night, and you have to be a little smart) overall and it’s home to a lot of Greeks from the villages. Most of them, as a matter of fact.

It’s no secret that Athens has gone through probably the worst times for thousands of years: The Persian wars, the Greek wars, the Roman Empire, the Ottoman Empire, WWI and WWII. But it has also gone through something horrible in the 21st century:  financial collapse.

Now, as a part Greek myself, I can tell you that the Greek spirit is one, if not the most, strong spirits in this world. Greek blood is different, and if you look at history or even come to Greece, you will understand what I mean. They do not give up, and the graffiti is a beautiful display of that.

When Greece has its financial crisis, it was absolutely devastating for a lot of people. Suicides, loss of homes, depression and a constant anxiety that is still present were all things that happened.

But the Greeks didn’t roll over. They took to the streets for their cries to be heard: and this is the birth of the graffiti.

Throughout our walk, you will see some of the most moving pieces of art that show Greeks are still fighting to be heard against corruption and injustice.

This path is not designed to be a typical look at the city, it is designed for you to see, think and feel the spirit of the Greeks. To hear their voices and see their passion splattered on the walls of the city.
